The Darndest Things Kids Say

Some years ago, there was a television show called “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” On that show, the host would start a conversation by posing a question about life topics to a child, who would typically respond with their own perspectives on the various topics. Often times the responses were funny, enlightening, but most importantly they were innocently honest. Now…let’s talk about my son, Kaden, and the darndest thing he said that touched my heart.

Every night we have a bedtime prayer routine and we each take turns on who gives the prayer. On this one night my son was saying his prayer and every

thing was going good…until the end when he said “And God please, please help Daddy lose weight.” At first, I was a little taken aback. But I refrained from making any negative comments as I want him to continue to feel free to express himself around me. So, I simply told him, “Great prayer son” and kissed him good night.

But later I thought about what he said. My son had simultaneously touched me and slightly offended me at the same time. It was the darndest thing.

You see, losing weight is a battle many of us face. It's like trying to fit into your favorite old jeans from 5 years and 25 pounds ago, while your taste buds are seduced by the love song of a juicy cheeseburger. And then there's me, pouring my heart and sweat into becoming a healthier version of myself, only to have my little guy throw a prayer curveball my way. On one hand, I am emotionally touched. Kaden has been paying attention to me and my noble weight loss efforts. Yet, me realizing that my journey to a healthier lifestyle hasn't gone unnoticed actually warms my heart, even if it's wrapped in a comical prayer package.

On the other hand, there's a tiny voice inside my head saying, "Wait a minute, kid. Are you saying all my sweat sessions and salad-eating marathons aren't enough? Do I need divine intervention to lose weight?" It's a funny thought, really. But hey, kids have their own unique way of expressing their love and concern, even if it stings the ego a bit.

So what's a Dad to do with this mix of sentimental and hilarious emotions? Well, I took a step back and appreciated the love behind the prayer. I realize that Kaden cares deeply about my well-being and wants me to be happy and healthy. Sure, the prayer may seem a bit misguided, but it's a reminder that my son sees me as more than just a number on a scale or a before-and-after picture.

So, to all my fellow Dads, next time you overhear your little one's prayers, brace yourselves. You never know what hilariously heartwarming requests they might send upward. Embrace the sentiment, have a good laugh, and keep being the incredible version of yourself that your child loves and cherishes. And remember, you've got a little admirer cheering you on, even if they have a funny way of showing it. Yes...it’s the darndest thing.
